Sargassum in Playa del Carmen: season and 2026 status
When the seaweed comes, and where to check
Sargassum is a brown seaweed that drifts in from the Atlantic and washes up on the Mexican Caribbean in season. This guide covers when it usually reaches Playa del Carmen, how 2026 went and which sources to check. Updated October 12, 2026.
When is sargassum season?
It usually starts in late March or April, is heaviest from about May to July, and fades in September and October. From November to February arrivals are usually low, although 2026 showed it can start early: this year it began in January, about three months ahead of the usual pattern.
How 2025 and 2026 went
In May 2025 the University of South Florida measured about 38 million tonnes of sargassum across the Atlantic, a record. 2026 was at least the second largest year on record, and Quintana Roo collected more than ever: over 121,000 tonnes by the end of August. Playa del Carmen collected the most of any municipality, about a third of the state total, which also reflects how much cleanup the city did.
Status in October 2026
On October 8, 2026 the Mexican Navy rated the state at its lowest alert level. Some beaches still had fresh arrivals in early October, and the decline is expected to continue through November and December. The season is winding down, but conditions still vary from beach to beach.
Where to check conditions
The Mexican Navy (SEMAR) publishes a four-colour alert for the state. The state environment ministry classifies individual beaches, and Playa del Carmen runs its own sargassum traffic light. For the bigger picture, the University of South Florida publishes a monthly outlook for the Caribbean.
What the city does
Playa del Carmen installs barriers offshore and, in 2026, crews from the Navy, the federal beach authority and the city cleaned the beaches every day, about 300 people a day as of May. The city ran the 2026 cleanup under the name Reto Sargazo.
If it arrives during your stay
The ferry to Cozumel leaves from downtown Playa del Carmen and takes 35 to 45 minutes, and travel guides often suggest Cozumel’s west coast on heavy days. Several of our buildings have pools, including the infinity pool at El Faro and the rooftop pools at Vedra and L Condos.
Rotting sargassum gives off hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. Studies by UNAM and IPN found the serious exposures among the workers who collect it, so it is best to stay away from decomposing piles.
