Where to stay in Playa del Carmen
Every part of town has its own pace.
Playa del Carmen is small, but each area feels different. We have worked here since 2007, and this is how the neighborhoods where we rent apartments compare.
Downtown & 5th Avenue (Centro)
The heart of Playa del Carmen: 5th Avenue’s restaurants, bars and shops, the beaches a block or two away, and the ferry to Cozumel within walking distance. You will not need a car. The trade-off is noise: the closer you are to 5th Avenue and the beach clubs, the louder the nights.
Best for: First visits, couples and groups who want to walk everywhere.
Where we rent here: El Faro · Corto Maltes · L Condos
More about the area: Mamitas Beach
Zazil-Ha (north end)
North of downtown, near Coco Beach and Punta Esmeralda: newer residential buildings, quieter streets and calmer beaches, while 5th Avenue is still a few minutes away on foot.
Best for: Families, longer stays and anyone who wants to sleep well but stay central.
Where we rent here: Vida Ocean
More about the area: Coco Beach
Gonzalo Guerrero
A local neighborhood a few blocks inland from downtown, with everyday shops and taquerías. Prices are friendlier, and 5th Avenue and the beach are roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk.
Best for: Value-minded travelers and monthly stays.
Where we rent here: Vedra
Playacar
A gated, green residential area just south of downtown, with security at the entrance, a golf course and wide beaches. Very quiet in the evenings; 5th Avenue is about 15 minutes away on foot.
Best for: Families and guests who want calm and space.
Where we rent here: Paseo del Sol
